Fried Okra

Our veggie garden has had a tough time of it this summer with the drought and the blazing heat.  Still, some things are starting to produce.  Our okra plants have been doing quite well.

In the same family as hibiscus plants, okra is quite pretty.  Its blooms are pretty showy.  After they’re spent, they develop into the long, slender, edible seed pods.  I picked a bunch and then my husband sliced, battered, and fried them up, yum!

Besides the okra, the tomatoes are finally starting to come in, too.  Not a huge yield this year, but there is nothing tastier than a fresh heirloom tomato, so I’ll take whatever I can get.

  1. Interesting. I have tasted okra a few times (it is not sold around here), but never seen an okra plant. I hope it will will thrive and make a good harvest.

    • Oddly enough, the okra plants are doing really well: they look healthy and are producing lots and lots of the okra pods. Apparently they are okay with hot, dry weather! Oh, and other than fried (not so healthy) okra is really delicious in Indian dishes or to thicken up a stew.

    I didn’t realise they were from the same family as hibiscus. I’ve just planted hibiscus after being told it would thrive in dry weather so it looks like okra will be a good choice to grow for next year.
